Historical sources
Our research may draw upon contemporary military records, official reports, personal statements, survivor testimony, newspapers, photographs, family collections, archival material and published historical research.
We identify the source of material wherever that information is available.
Primary and secondary material
We distinguish between primary historical sources and later interpretations. A contemporary military document, for example, records information created during the period being studied, while a later article or recollection represents a subsequent interpretation or memory of events.
The presence of material in the Exercise Tiger archive does not automatically mean that every statement contained within that material is accepted by the Trust as established fact.
Transcriptions
Where documents are transcribed, we aim to reproduce the source faithfully. Apparent spelling mistakes, unusual terminology, omissions and other characteristics of the original may therefore remain in the transcription.
Where we have supplied explanatory material, we aim to distinguish the Trust’s editorial explanation from the words of the original source.
Conflicting evidence
Historical records can contain conflicting names, dates, numbers and descriptions. Where reliable sources disagree, we aim to identify the discrepancy rather than conceal it.
Information may therefore change as additional evidence becomes available.
The Roll of Honour
The Roll of Honour is a continuing research project. Information is added and amended as records are located, compared and verified.
We welcome information from relatives, researchers and other knowledgeable sources. New information is assessed against the existing historical record before changes are made.
Family collections
We are particularly grateful to relatives and descendants who make photographs, letters and other personal records available for preservation. Where permission allows, the provenance and donor information associated with these collections is identified.

If you believe that information on this website is incorrect, incomplete or insufficiently sourced, please contact the Exercise Tiger Trust and provide the evidence supporting the proposed correction.
Our aim is not to claim infallibility. Our aim is to maintain an increasingly accurate and transparent historical record.
Last reviewed
Each major research page should display the date on which it was last reviewed. Where substantive historical information changes, the reason for the change should be recorded where practical.
