Richard Shelley Carles, a 24-year-old U.S. Army Staff Sergeant, was killed in action in the English Channel on April 28, 1944.

Born in Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania, he served with the U.S. Army 46th Infantry Battalion, 5th Armored Division. Carles was killed while training for the D-Day landings onboard USS LST-507.

Honours and Memorials

Richard’s name is inscribed in the American Roll of Honour book in the American Memorial Chapel Roll of Honour at St. Paul’s Cathedral in London. and on the Tablets of the Missing at the Cambridge American Cemetery and Memorial, Cambridge, United Kingdom.
